What is Tashkeel?

Tashkeel (تشكيل) is the Arabic diacritical marking system used to indicate the correct pronunciation of letters. It mainly includes:

Fatḥa (فتحة) — short diagonal stroke above the letter, pronounced as "a": بَ = ba

Kasra (كسرة) — short diagonal stroke below the letter, pronounced as "i": بِ = bi

Ḍamma (ضمة) — small curl above the letter, pronounced as "u": بُ = bu

Sukūn (سكون) — small circle above the letter, indicates no vowel: بْ = b

Šadda (شدة) — small "w" above the letter, indicates gemination: بّ = bb

Why doesn't it show full Harakat (diacritical marks)?

Full Arabic diacritization (Tashkeel) requires comprehensive judgment based on grammar, context, and pronunciation rules — it is essentially a Natural Language Processing (NLP) problem that currently requires AI/deep learning models for high accuracy. The current tool provides basic character-level diacritization and comprehensive character analysis features to assist beginners in learning letters and pronunciation.

What standard does the Latin transliteration use?

This tool uses the academic transliteration standard based on IJMES (International Journal of Middle East Studies). It uses Latin letters with special diacritics to represent unique Arabic sounds, such as ḥ (ح), ṣ (ص), ḍ (ض), ṭ (ط), ẓ (ظ), ʿ (ع), ʾ (ء). This is the most widely used transliteration standard in international Middle Eastern studies.

Which Arabic characters are supported?

All 28 standard Arabic letters are supported (from Alif ا to Yāʾ ي), as well as common variants (Tāʾ Marbūṭa ة, Alif Maqṣūra ى, Hamza ء, Wāw and Yāʾ with Hamza, etc.). Basic Harakat symbols are also supported (Fatḥa, Kasra, Ḍamma, Sukūn, Šadda). Extended Arabic script letters used in Persian, Urdu, etc. are not supported.
