When to Use BMP

What makes BMP different from other formats?

BMP is an uncompressed bitmap format that stores raw pixel data. It produces very large files with zero compression artifacts. BMP is native to Windows and useful for legacy compatibility, but PNG is recommended for most use cases.

How do I select specific pages to convert?

You can convert All Pages, or use Custom Range by entering page numbers. Use commas for individual pages (e.g., 1,3,5) and hyphens for ranges (e.g., 1-5).

What DPI should I use?

72 DPI is standard for screen viewing and web use. 150 DPI offers a good balance of quality and file size. 300 DPI is recommended for high-quality printing. Higher DPI produces significantly larger files.

How many pages can I convert at once?

There is no hard limit on pages, but very large PDFs (200+ pages) at high DPI may consume significant memory. For best results, we recommend converting large PDFs in batches or at a lower DPI.

Why are BMP files so large?

BMP files are the largest because they are completely uncompressed — they store raw pixel data directly. A single BMP page at 300 DPI can be hundreds of megabytes. For most purposes, PNG or WebP offer far better compression with comparable quality.

Can I convert password-protected PDFs?

Currently, password-protected PDFs are not supported. Please remove the password protection before uploading.

When is BMP output actually useful?

BMP is used in legacy Windows applications, certain industrial/medical systems (DICOM pipelines) and as an uncompressed intermediate for pixel-perfect editing. If you are not targeting one of these, PNG or WebP is smaller and equally lossless — but this tool is here when you truly need BMP.

Does BMP support color profiles?

BMP files from this tool carry plain RGB data without an embedded ICC profile, which is what most legacy software expects. For print workflows that need color management, TIFF with profiles is the better choice.
