What is IBAN?

The International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is the standard account format for cross-border transfers within Europe and beyond. It consists of 15 to 34 alphanumeric characters, including a country code, check digits, a domestic bank code, and an account number. The bank code embedded in the IBAN identifies the financial institution holding the account.

Supported Countries

This tool supports IBAN validation for the following countries:

Free online IBAN validator and checker with bank name lookup and SEPA reachability verification. Validate International Bank Account Numbers from 73+ countries. Identify bank name from IBAN, verify bank codes, MOD-97 checksum validation, format verification, country detection, BIC lookup, and SEPA scheme support (SCT, SDD, COR1, B2B, SCC). Supports Germany, France, Spain, Italy, UK, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and more. IBAN format validation runs in the browser; bank name and SEPA data are retrieved from the server.

Tips & Tricks

Real-Time Input Validation

IBANs are automatically validated using MOD-97 checksum and format verification upon input — no button click needed. Supports space-separated input (e.g., DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00). The tool automatically removes spaces, converts lowercase to uppercase, and looks up the bank name from the bank code embedded in your IBAN.

Covers 73+ Countries with Bank Lookup

Supports IBAN formats for 73+ countries across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. Each country's IBAN length, bank code position, and account number format are built-in, with automatic recognition, parsing, and bank name lookup. Identify the issuing bank directly from any supported IBAN.

Privacy & Data Handling

IBAN format validation runs in your browser. Bank name and SEPA reachability data are retrieved from our server to provide accurate results. Your IBAN is transmitted for these lookups but is never stored or logged. All data is cleared when you close or refresh the page.

FAQ

What is IBAN and what is it used for?

IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the standardized format for international bank account numbers, primarily used for cross-border transfers in the SEPA region. It contains a country code (2 characters), check digits (2 characters), and a domestic bank account number (length varies by country). Using IBAN effectively reduces failures or delays caused by incorrect account format in cross-border transfers.

What does MOD-97 validation mean?

MOD-97 is the core validation algorithm for IBAN. The IBAN is rearranged (first 4 characters moved to the end), letters are converted to digits (A=10, B=11, ..., Z=35), and then the modulo 97 is computed — the result must be 1. This is the validation method specified by the international standard ISO 13616, effectively detecting common input errors.

Does passing validation mean the IBAN is definitely correct?

Passing IBAN format validation and MOD-97 checksum verification only means the IBAN has correct structure and a consistent checksum. It does not mean the account actually exists or has been opened at a bank. Before making actual transfers, we recommend verifying account validity through a small test transfer via your bank. The IBAN you enter is sent to our server for bank name and SEPA reachability lookups, but is never stored or logged.

What is SEPA Reachability?

SEPA Reachability shows which SEPA payment schemes a bank supports. Based on the Bundesbank SCL Directory, this tool checks the BIC extracted from your IBAN against SEPA scheme participation data for SCT (SEPA Credit Transfer), SDD (SEPA Direct Debit), COR1 (Same-Day Direct Debit), B2B (Business-to-Business Direct Debit), and SCC (SEPA Card Clearing). A checkmark indicates the scheme is supported; a cross means it is not available.
